According to accurate historical studies, Cogoleto may be the cradle of Columbus. The city celebrates the greatest Italian navigator of all time with the Cogoleto event at the Times of Columbus in the week from Saturday 8 to Saturday 15 October, interspersed with Columbus Day, 12 October.
The program of the event, organized by the Municipality of Cogoleto in collaboration with CogoLove and Cogoleto Turismo, will begin on Saturday 8 October with the Historical Reenactment starting at 3:30 pm in the Lungomare. In the streets of the historic city center, there will be the Historical Parade, with the participation of flag wavers, Renaissance dances, fighting, and medieval encampments. The program will then continue at 9 pm with the Concert in Tribute to Christopher Columbus with the Saxophones Quartet at the Oratory of San Lorenzo.
On Wednesday, 12 October, Columbus Day, celebrated worldwide in memory of the Discovery of the Americas in 1492, starting at 10:30 am at the Christopher Columbus Monument in Piazza Giusti, there will be the laying of flower wreaths with the students of the Comprehensive Institute of Cogoleto. Finally, on Saturday 15 October at 9 pm the concert entitled 1492 – An Ocean of Notes will be held at the Berellini Auditorium. The complete program will then be announced in the coming days by the Municipality of Cogoleto.
The house where perhaps Christopher Columbus was born is located in Via Rati, in the historic center of Cogoleto. In this household, two very important documents were found that have allowed historians to indicate the building as the birthplace of the greatest Italian navigator of all times; the Testament of Domenico Colombo, Cristopher’s father, dating back to 1449 and the power of attorney of the cosmographer and navigator Bartholomew Colombus, Cristopher’s brother, dating back to 1482, with the seal of the Notary Conreno Verdino di Varazze. Over the centuries, the house, no longer open to the public, has been visited by numerous important personalities such as Honorè Benedict De Saussure, Alexandre Dumas, and Emperor Frederick III of Germany.
